I am also interested in exploring the recent shifting of cultural paradigms and their existential impact through the juxtaposition and marrying of vernacular materials and objects. These juxtapositions create an absurd sense of tension that includes fragility, value, deception, weight (physical and visual), power, control, and chaos.

This same juxtaposition of materials can also challenge our perceptions. Throughout my work, materials are altered, and elements are highlighted or concealed to provoke and engage my audience. Through this process I have become very intrigued with the idea of deception. Not to permanently deceive or harm my audience, but to “nudge” them as if they are gently falling asleep and I am attempting to wake them up. The idea of deception led me to title this grouping of bench installations, Banca Rotta (Broken Bench), a reference to bankruptcy, and in this case moral bankruptcy.

For example, I am fascinated with the idea of someone approaching my Leopold bench assuming it is made of wood, only to realize it is made of foam. These are the details that drive my practice. In part, I think that has a lot to do with living in a society where we are forced to navigate under fallacies, uncertainties, and contradictions, remaining oblivious.

In the last installation of the Aldo Leopold Bench, I ❤️ Aldo affirmed this notion to be accurate. After multiple attempts by visitors to sit on the bench while I was installing it, the curator and I were forced to put a sign on the seat the read, “Made of foam. Please don’t sit on this bench.”, as well as running some string across two posts in front of it, it was still sat in and broke.
